World Leader
    (April 14, 1945- )
    Born in Lepa, Samoa
Prime Minister of Samoa (November 1998– )
Birth name is Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegoi
    Human Rights Protection Party leader
Imposed the controversial switch from right-side to left-side driving (effective September 7, 2009)
Don’t even try to pronounce that name.
He regarded the right hand as the smart hand and the left hand as the stupid hand (what a metaphor).
He based the shift of lanes on the traffic laws and import costs of New Zealand and Australia, compared to the farther away United States and Europe (‘it’s pure common sense and anyone who says otherwise is not thinking properly’).
He resisted opposition from all sides, especially from a political party formed for the sole purpose of stopping the first lane switch in 31 years.
He achieved a Masters Degree, unusual for most Samoans.
At the 2007 South Pacific Games, he competed in target archery — with only five months of training (he won silver in team recurve).
To simplify the transition, he announced, ‘Don’t drive if you are sleepy, drunk, or just had a fight with your wife.’ (Wait, don’t women drive, too?)
He was a vocal opponent of the Fijian dictator Frank Bainimarama.
Opponents vowed to restore right-hand traffic upon his leaving office.
