    (March 7, 1944-January 1, 1997)
    Born in Fort Worth, Texas
Birth name was John Townes Van Zandt
    Country/folk singer/songwriter
Recorded the albums 'For the Sake of the Song' (1968), 'Our Mother the Mountain' (1969), 'Townes Van Zandt' (1969), 'Delta Momma Blues' (1971), 'High, Low and In Between' (1972), 'The Late Great Townes Van Zandt' (1972), 'Flyin' Shoes' (1978), 'At My Window' (1987), 'Roadsongs' (1993) and 'No Deeper Blue' (1994)
    He was manic-depressive.
    He abused alcohol and heroin.
He sometimes took the stage drunk and forgot the lyrics to his own songs.
In the late 70s, he became reclusive, living in a remote cabin, with his main interests being planting morning glories and watching Happy Days.
He died 44 years to the day after Hank Williams, one of his chief songwriting influences.
After his death, his manager and his ex-wife battled for nearly a decade over control of his recordings.
He lost much of his long term memory after undergoing insulin shock treatment for manic depression.
He signed over publishing rights for his songs to his third wife, who would then tell him, 'I can't wait until the day you're dead because then you're gonna be worth more to me than you ever was alive.'
His song 'Pancho and Lefty' became a #1 country hit for Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard.
Kris Kirstofferson called him 'a songwriter's songwriter.'
Steve Earle called him 'the best songwriter in the whole world and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that.'
