    She refused to leave her high school during an air-raid drill as a civil disobedience protest (1957).

    Although a student at Boston University, she rarely attends classes.
    She leads a boycott of ABC-TV's 'Hootenanny' because they barred Pete Seeger, a political activist, from performing (1963).
    She protested the Vietnam War by withholding 60% of her taxes from the I.R.S.
    She fought against the death penalty, including all night vigils.
    She was arrested twice and served 10 days and later a month in prison for twice blocking an Armed Forces induction Center in Oakland California (1967).
    Her records are banned at Army PXs (1968).
    Her anti war remarks on 'The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour' are completely censored (1969).
    She protested the building of a gym over the site where four students from Kent State were killed (1970) by the National Guard (1977).
    While in Spain, she sung 'We Shall Not Be Moved,' a song that was banned for over 40 years in that country (1977).
    Atlanta Georgia celebrated Joan Baez Day (August 2, 1975).
    Although she kept it in the closet, she had many same sex lovers, including Kim Chappell, Peggy Caserta (Janis Joplin's ex-lesbian lover) and Janis Joplin.
    She was a pioneer of the feminist movement, burning her bra in the '60s and refusing to ever wear one again.

    When she was ten, she spent a year living in Baghdad Iraq with her family (1951).
    She performed with John Lee Hooker and Bob Dylan prior to them becoming great successes.
    She becomes a strong advocate of the civil rights movement and her no discrimination policy is the subject of a Time Magazine article (November 23, 1962).
    She donated her time to non violent Anti Vietnam War protests and Civil Rights causes.
    She participated in the landmark Civil Rights march from Selma to Montgomery Alabama (1965).
    She attempted to enroll five black children in a formerly segregated school, but is barred from entering the school (1966).
    She founded the Institute For The Study Of Nonviolence in Carmel Valley, California (1965).
    She founded and ran Humanitas International Human Rights Committee, that among its causes were protesting Vietnam's human rights violations of 'boat people' refugees.
    Shew was the opening act of the U.S. portion of Live Aid (1985).
    She lobbied against U.S. support of the contras in Nicaragua (1987).
    She raised money to support her cousin Peter Baez, who was charged with running a medicinal marijuana clinic.
    Despite six nominations, she never won a Grammy.
