    Founded the Society of Friends, more commonly known as the Quakers
    His parents were Puritans.
    He used 'thee' and 'thou' all the time.
    He refused to pay tithes to support local parishes.
    He instructed his followers to 'tremble at the word of the Lord' (hence the term 'Quaker').
    He had nothing to do with Quaker Oats.
    He believed that people could communicate with God without priests.
    He refused to recognize titles of nobility.
    He preached equality and religious tolerance.
    He was jailed, persecuted, and physically attacked for preaching his views.
    His followers included William Penn, who founded Pennsylvania.
    The Quakers have been active in many social causes, including abolitionism and women's suffrage.
    Famous Quakers include Judi Dench, Bonnie Raitt, Susan B. Anthony, and Dave Matthews.
