    He did not have his high school diploma prior to being 95 years old.
    He was turned down in his first attempt to get into the Canadian military, he was only 15 years old.
    When he was almost 16 years old, he got into the Canadian military in his second attempt by lying about his age.
    He did not see combat as he was completing his training in the United Kingdom prior to the end of World War I.
    He was married twice.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He grew up in poverty.
    He lost his father following a tree cutting accident when he was a very young boy.
    He gained U.S. citizenship after serving in the U.S. Army during the early 1920s.
    He used to work as an electrician.
    At 108, he gained dual citizenship as his Canadian citizenship was brought back to him.
    During his 109th birthday, he had birthday greetings from Queen Elizabeth II and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
