Fictional Character
Most sightings occurred in West Virginia between November, 1966, and December, 1967
Usually described as a man-sized creature with wings and glowing red eyes
Subject of the book 'The Mothman Prophecies' (1975) by John Keel
There is no scientific evidence it exists.
It was linked to the collapse of the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, which killed 46 people.
Cryptozoologist Loren Coleman claims there is a 'Mothman curse' killing witnesses and researchers.
If Coleman really believes a curse is targeting researchers, why is he publicizing it, thus putting himself on the hit list?
Despite the name, many early sightings claimed the creature resembled a bird rather than a moth.
Unlike those wimps Sasquatch and Nessie, this guy is (allegedly) willing to kill.
The 'Mothman curse' is right in at least one respect: eventually everyone associated with Mothman will die.
There is no connection, other than timing, between the Mothman and the Silver Bridge collapse.
An analysis found, prosaically enough, that the collapse was caused by a defective eyebar and heavy traffic loads.
Point Pleasant has a Mothman Museum and annual Mothman Festival.
