Developed binomial nomenclature for formally naming species
Considered the father of modern taxonomy (the science of describing and categorizing organisms)
Published 'Systema Naturae' (first edition, 1735; 13th and final edition, 1770)

Why he might be annoying:

He refused to send his daughters to school.
He declared, 'God created, Linnaeus organized.'
He considered himself a second Adam and on the cover of 'Systema Naturae,' depicted a man giving Linnean names to animals being created in the Garden of Eden.
He wrote that his fellow Europeans were 'swift, clever and inventive' while Africans were 'slow, relaxed and negligent.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He earned a degree from the University of Harderwijk in the Netherlands in only six days, which consisted mostly of publishing his botanical notes.
He grew marijuana. (But only as part of a study of plant sexuality.)
He was the most famous scientist of his day.
Catherine the Great sent him seeds from Russian plants for study.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau declared, 'I know no greater man on earth.'
