Religious Figure
    (1015-May 25, 1085)
    Born in Sovana, Italy
Pope of the Catholic Church (April 22, 1073-May 25, 1085)
There is uncertainty over the date of his birth.
There was an outburst of support that brought him into the papacy, but some speculate that this was staged beforehand.
He did not create it but was primarily responsible for the policy of celibacy for the Church's clergy.
He excommunicated like it was going out of style.
He excommunicated King Henry IV twice.
He believed no other organization or power was superior to the power of the Catholic Church.
His overreaching caused him to be removed from power and replaced by Antipope Clement III.
His epitath is 'I have loved justice and hated iniquity; therefore, I die in exile.'
He ended the practice of secular rulers deciding the pope, with the College of Cardinals doing so instead.
He fought against simony (the act of paying for sacraments and holy offices).
He was canonized by Pope Benedict XIII (1728).
He fought against corruption within the Catholic Church.
On his deathbed he withdrew all excommunications except for those on King Henry IV and Antipope Clement III.
He is considered one of the greatest popes of history.
