Died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at age 69

Why he might be annoying:

He did an early TV ad for a big and tall man's clothing line.
He spent four years with chimp J. Fred Muggs as a co-host (1953-57).
His increased mental instability led to tirades and at times he would simply walk off the air during live performances.
He became addicted to a codeine concoction he called 'the doctor.'
When he refused to budge from NBC studios until his contract demands were met, he was fired (June 16, 1961).
He told audience members on the 'Today Show's 30th anniversary he'd be back for the 35th, but killed himself six months later.

Why he might not be annoying:

He served in the U.S. Navy as a yeoman school instructor during World War II.
He turned in some early radio reports from unusual locations; submarines, hot air balloons, coal mines, etc.
His easy-going, homebody delivery style earned him praise from both viewers and critics.
He earned his nickname by explaining complex issues in easy to understand terms.
His sign off for the 'Today Show' was 'Peace' with an upraised palm.
He was devastated when his first wife committed suicide in 1961.
