Why he might be annoying:

He wanted to be a lyricist as well as a composer, but never found success without a partner.
He and his most frequent collaborator, lyricist Sheldon Harnick, broke up over a dispute about who should direct 'The Rothschilds.'
He wrote a musical about the tax code; after a falling-out with his co-author, the show ended up as a non-musical play.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was married to Patricia Faggen for 60 years until his death.
In addition to a Tony, he and Harnick won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for 'Fiorello!'
He and Harnick buried the hatchet to write a new song, 'Topsy Turvy,' for the 2007 revival of 'Fiddler.'
He died barely a week after speaking at the funeral of 'Fiddler on the Roof' playwright Joseph Stein.
