    Born in Hamburg, Germany
H.A. Rey (September 16, 1898-August 26, 1977), birth name was Hans Augusto Reyersbach
Margret Rey (May 16, 1906-December 21, 1996), birth name was Margarete Elizabeth Waldstein
    Co-wrote seven 'Curious George' books
After H.A.'s death, Margaret wrote two dozen more Curious George stories with Alan Shalleck
After getting married in Brazil (1935), they sailed to Europe for their honeymoon with two pet monkeys, who died en route.
Margret's name was originally kept off the books because there was a glut of women writing children's lit.
She claimed writing the books was an ordeal: 'Always we waited several years between books until the pain is forgotten, like a mother in childbirth.'
Curious George was called Zozo in the original British edition of the book, apparently out of worries that the original name would be considered disrectful to King George VI.
An urban legend claims Curious George was inspired by the antics of a young George W. Bush; however, Bush was born five years after the first Curious George book was published.
When the Nazis invaded France, they escaped Paris on two bicycles built from spare parts, bringing only some food, some clothes and five manuscripts, including Curious George.
They were animal lovers whose first stop when visiting a new city was always the zoo.
H.A. Rey wrote a popular amateur astronomy book, 'The Stars: A New Way to See Them' (1952), that has remained in print for over fifty years.
Margret established the Curious George Foundation to fund programs for children and prevent animal cruelty (1989).
