    First baseman for the Cincinnati Stars (1880) and the Cincinnati Red Stockings/Reds (1883-91)
    Two-time AA home run champion (1884, 1888)
    Hit for the cycle three times (September 12, 1883; September 19, 1883; August 6, 1890)
    Inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame (2012)

    His nickname was 'Long John.'

    He had to change his position from a catcher to an infielder in order to fend off injuries while holding a job as a lithographer.
