He was virtually unheard of as a potential head coaching prospect prior to his hiring in Atlanta.
He spent close to 30 years as an assistant coach.
Many football pundits felt like he was walking into a situation over his head upon his hiring as Falcons head coach.
He was the fifth of eight children.
He has a generic full name.

He is described as being a dedicated worker who expects 110% from his players.
While with the Ravens, he was instrumental in the development of notable Pro-Bowl linebackers Ray Lewis and Peter Boulware.
He stood by his decision to name Matt Ryan his starting quarterback to the media after reporters questioned his decision.
Despite being known as a defensive coach, he hired Mike Mularkey as offensive co-ordinator and built an offense scheme around Ryan and running back Michael Turner.
Upon his hiring with the Falcons, he personally met with his players and team administration and told them they were all equal parts of the team.
Unlike his predecessor Bobby Petrino, he is respected by his players and values their opinions.
