    Commissioner of Public Safety for Birmingham, Alabama (1937-1953, 1957-1963)
    President of the Alabama Public Service Commission (1964-1972)
    Chief opponent of the civil rights movement marches in Birmingham (May 1963)
    He was racist.
    He went by his middle name.
    He refused to enforce any federal rulings against segregation of Black Americans.
    He ordered the use of water hoses, dogs and other harsh methods to stop peaceful civil rights protesters under Martin Luther King (May 1963).
    He is one of the most hated figures in the civil rights movement.
    He was hugely popular among many people in Alabama.
    His acts of violence against black protesters helped to make more Americans support the civil rights movement.
    President John F. Kennedy remarked that 'the civil rights movement should thank God for Bull Connor.'
