His name is almost similar to serial killer Patrick KEARNEY (except this NFL player's last name has no 'A' in Kerney).
He is often seen at practice with his shirt up.
In December 2003, he was accused of making insensitive remarks about persons suffering from AIDS-related illnesses on an Atlanta radio program. The story was carried on the front page of Southern Voice newspaper.
His close friend, gay playwright/columnist Topher Payne, defended his comments and stated Kerney was misunderstood.
When he first entered the NFL, he set up a foundation in name of his late brother called the Lt. Thomas L. Kerney Endowment Fund.
The organization assists children of fallen police officers with college scholarships.
