    She was known as ‘Canada’s Sweetheart.’
    She began training eight hours a day when she was just seven.
    The Canadian media covered her nonstop at the height of her fame.
    The city of Ottawa awarded her a convertible in 1947. She refused it to keep her amateur status.
    She turned professional shortly after her gold medal win at the 1948 Winter Olympics.
    She disliked traveling constantly to ice shows and retired for good as a skater at age 25.
    She was furious when Life magazine claimed she and her childhood idol Sonja Henie were rivals.
    She accused the ‘bloc’ (judges from former Soviet countries) of denying Jamie Sale and David Pelletier a gold medal at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics (2002).
    At 13, she was the first woman to land a double lutz.
    She was admired for her graceful figures and rapid spinning.
    She was the first North American to win the European and World Figure Skating Championships.
    She was the first Canadian woman to win an Olympic gold medal for singles skating.
    She won her Olympic medal despite having to skate on a slushy outdoor rink.
    Prime Minister MacKenzie King credited her with helping Canadians get over their post World War II doldrums.
    A doll based on her was very popular with Canadian girls in the 1940s and 1950s.
    She became an accomplished equestrian in her 40s.
