Why he might be annoying:

As a kid his father tried to keep him out of pool halls, but once he started winning money his tune changed.
He lost to World Champion Ralph Greenleaf. He was only six at the time and had to stand on a box to reach the table (1919).
He claimed he never 'hustled' anyone in billiards. A claim some of his losing rivals bitterly disputed.
He had a cameo role in 'The Hustler,' playing a stakes holder named 'Wille' (big stretch).
He also made a difficult massé shot for the film. The problem was a clearly marked sign in the background of the set: 'No massé shots.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He fought in WW II.
He sank a probably unbreakable 526 consecutive balls in a exhibition (1954).
He recovered from a stroke at 43 (1956).
He taught Newman how to play pool.
He had friendly rivalries with 'arch-nemesis' Minnesota Fats, playing the straight man to Fats' jolly joker persona.
He won nearly 99% of his matches against Fats.
He is enshrined in the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame (1968).
He appeared as a sportscaster in the James Coburn billiards movie 'The Baltimore Bullet (1980).'
