Basketball Player
    (June 22, 1947-January 5, 1988)
    Nickname is 'Pistol Pete'
Played for Louisiana State University, Atlanta Hawks, New Orleans/Utah Jazz and Boston Celtics
College Player of the Year (1970)
Inducted into Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame (1987)
Subject of the TV movie 'Pistol: The Birth of a Legend'
He can best be described as a 'hot dog.'
Though he had spectacular individual stats, most of the teams he played for were mediocre.
That gave him the reputation of being a 'me first, team second' player.
He probably got special treatment at LSU, since his father was the coach.
Pat Riley called him 'the most overrated superstar.'
Though he was the star player of his home state New Orleans Jazz, the team only stayed at that city for five years.
He was in a state of depression in the two years after he retired at 33.
He scored 3,667 points (44.2 points per game) when he was at LSU, an NCAA record that may never be broken. He did this without the benefit of a three-point line.
With his behind-the-back moves and circus shots, he is considered one of the best showmen in basketball history.
His number has been retired by both the Utah Jazz and the New Orleans Hornets.
He snapped out of depression and alcoholism after he became a born-again Christian.
He made the prophetic and ironic statement during a 1974 interview: 'I don't want to play 10 years and then die of a heart attack when I'm 40.'
He played 10 years in the NBA, and died of a heart attack while playing a pick-up basketball game (he was 40).
He was represented by his two sons during the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History ceremony (1996).
