Her mother told her repeatedly she would grow up to be a genius.
She and sister were called ‘Little Precious' and ‘Little Pretty.'
She went to New York City to study music but lost the tuition money.
Most of her books are about Southern Gothic misfits.
She and her husband, both bisexual, committed adultery with the same man.
Arthur Miller called her a touching but second rate author.

She took on low paying day jobs to attend night school at Columbia University.
She had serious health problems such as rheumatic fever from the time she was 15.
Her husband tried to convince her to commit suicide with him (she declined).
Graham Greene praised her ‘original poetic sensibility' and thought her superior to William Faulkner.
Both Tennessee Williams and Charles Bukowski wrote poems about her after her death.
