Basketball Player

The Resume

    (March 14, 1946-June 2, 2020)
Elected to Basketball Hall of Fame (1988)
NBA Rookie of the Year (1969)
    NBA MVP (1969)
    NBA All-Star (1969-'73, '75)
    NBA Champion (1978)
    NBA Finals MVP (1978)
    J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award (1975)
50 Greatest Players in NBA History (1996)

Why he might be annoying:

For a Hall of Fame player, he didn't score much (career 10.8 PPG).
    He rarely smiles.
He may not only be the worst coach in NBA history (202-345 record), but the worst General Manager as well.
Many people called for his head as coach, but felt he was retained because he is very close to team owner Abe Pollin.
As coach and later GM, he took a franchise with a winning tradition and ran it into the ground.
He oversaw the name change from 'Bullets' to 'Wizards,' a name Bullet fans loathe.
He routinely got fleeced as general manager.
He consistently traded young and bigger players for old and smaller players.
Former Bullets GM John Nash wanted to draft Kevin Garnett in 1995, but was allegedly overruled by Unseld, who didn't want to take a high school player.
He traded Chris Webber for Mitch Richmond.
He traded Rasheed Wallace for Rod Strickland.
He traded Ben Wallace for Ike Austin (WHAT?!).
He traded a 1st round pick for Mark Price, who was washed up and played just a handful of games for the team.

Why he might not be annoying:

He dominated the paint at 6'7, and almost always covered players much bigger.
Playing against him has been compared to posting up a wrecking ball.
He wasn't known for being dirty, but he beat the hell out of his opponents.
He and Wilt Chamberlain are the only players in NBA history to have won both Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player in the same season.
He could grab a rebound, and fire the ball (without it touching the floor) off the opposite backboard.
Despite having horrific knee problems, he never complained about being in pain.
The Bullets never had a winning record before he arrived.
He led the Bullets to four NBA Finals, and won it all in 1977-78.
His red, white and blue #41 Bullets jersey is among the most popular throwback jerseys.
He is involved with several charities in the Baltimore/Washington area.
He is known as an intellectual off the court and values education.
Before being drafted by the Bullets, he wanted to become a teacher.
He and his wife, Connie, a school teacher, opened a private elementary school near Baltimore, which serves 175 children.
