    (October 22, 1913-May 25, 1954)
    Born in Budapest, Hungary
Birth name was Endre Erno Friedman
Covered the Spanish Civil War, Sino-Japanese War, World War II, the First Arab-Israeli War and the French Indochina War
He had a reputation as a gambler and a womanizer.
While living in Paris he created ‘Robert Capa' as a ‘famous American photographer' whose works he was selling.
The ruse enabled him to sell his photos at three times the standard rate.
Most of his photos of the D-Day landings (June 6, 1944) were destroyed and the remainder came out blurred when a technician at Life magazine dried the negatives too fast.
Although he had sworn not to risk his life in another war, he agreed to cover the war in Indochina for Life.
While passing through a dangerous area, he left his jeep to go up the road and photograph advancing troops. He died when he stepped on a land mine.
He fled Hungary and then Germany because of anti-Semitism.
He wrote, ‘If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough.'
He died with his camera in his hand.
The Overseas Press Club established a Robert Capa Award for ‘superlative photography requiring exceptional courage.'
Cinematographer Janusz Kaminski emulated his out-of-focus D-Day photos in filming ‘Saving Private Ryan.'
