    (circa 3000 BC-circa 500)
    Located in Hisarlik, Anatolia, Turkey
Site of nine ancient cities (Troy I-Troy IX)
First excavated in 1871 by Heinrich Schliemann who claimed he had discovered the site of Homeric Troy
Homeric Troy currently thought to be Troy VIIa (circa 1300-1190 BC)
Until the late 1800s, most scholars believed the Troy of ‘The Iliad’ and ‘The Odyssey’ was a mere legend.
Schliemann, the first archaeologist to excavate Troy, destroyed much of the site.
Over the years, many of its artifacts were looted or smuggled out of the country.
According to Homer, the Trojans were thoroughly punked by a giant wooden horse full of Greek soldiers.
Some scholars dispute Schliemann’s claims that he discovered the legendary Troy.
Although Homer’s Troy was only one of several cities on this site, there is little interest in these other Troys.
It is now a kitschy tourist attraction, complete with a reconstructed wooden horse.
Recent excavations support Schliemann’s belief he had found the Homeric Troy.
Ancient Egyptian and Hitterite documents also suggest it was a real city.
Homer’s Troy was one of the wealthiest and most cultured cities of its time.
Thanks to its defensive walls, it withstood the Greek siege for ten years.
It was eventually defeated by the Greeks, who killed or enslaved most of its citizens.
Centuries after the fall of Homeric Troy, Augustus founded Ilium (Troy IX), an important center of trade during the Roman Empire.
