He played in a lot of B-movies throughout his career.
The Wizard was his only really memorable role during his film career.

He was selected for his role as the Wizard over such big wigs as Wallace Berry, Ed Wynn, and W.C. Fields.
He actually played five roles in 'The Wizard of Oz:' The Wizard, Professor Marvel, The gatekeeper, the Wizard's guard and the driver of the horse of a different color.
He was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar twice (in 1935 and 1943).
He was married to the same woman for 35 years until his death.
He won the annual Honolulu Sailboat race (1947).
