Despite this he has a long anti-gay voting record, including on issues like marriage, adoption, and being in the military.
While visiting Colombia’s Lower House Chamber he sat on the podium, which many saw as a sign of disrespect.

Why he might not be annoying:

He eventually voted for the overturning of ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.’
It is possible his homosexuality has cost him leadership roles within the Republican party.
He was a strong supporter of Ronald Reagan's anti-Communist foreign policy.
