The T stands for 'Taliaferro.'
The Tuskegee Institute opened with one teacher and thirty pupils (July 4, 1881).
He warned African Americans not to be entranced by their newfound freedom.
He was sharply criticized by other black leaders, such as W. E. B. du Bois, who opposed Washington.
He had a nervous breakdown prior to his died.
He always used his middle initial 'T,' never known as Booker Washington (how pretentious!).

He was born a slave, but when he was nine, slavery was abolished.
Due to his family's poverty he did not receive a formal education.
He began work at nine for a salt furnace and later in a coal mine.
He enrolled in the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute at sixteen, working as a janitor to support himself.
He graduated in three years, returned home, and worked as a teacher for two years. He returned to school to study theology.
He educated Native Americans.
He invited George Washington Carver to join the faculty of Tuskegee Institute. Carver's scientific discoveries at Tuskegee improved griculture in the South.
He felt blacks would best gain equality by improving their economic situation through education, rather than by demanding equal rights.
He was awarded honorary doctorates by both Harvard University and Dartmouth College.
