    Located between Mongolia and Russia
Also known as the Tuvan People’s Republic
    Capital was Kyzyl
Area: 65,800 square miles (slightly larger than England and Wales)
    Population (1944): 95,400
    Annexed by the Soviet Union
    Became the Tuvan Autonomous Oblast
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, became the Tyva Republic within the Russian Federation

Why Tannu Tuva might be annoying:

The Soviet Union and Mongolia were the only countries to formally recognize its independence.
After its first Prime Minister, Donduk Kuular, declared Buddhism the state religion and tried to limit Russian immigration, the Soviet Union engineered a coup d’etat in which Kuular was arrested and executed (1929).
The new government launched a campaign to stamp out Buddhism and shamanism, reducing the number of lamaseries in the country from 25 in 1929 to one in 1931.
It printed a number of postage stamps that were dubious in both authenticity – many having been produced solely for sale to collectors without ever being used for mail – and accuracy – such a stamp showing a camel racing a locomotive even though Tannu Tuva had no railroads.

Why Tannu Tuva might not be annoying:

Although the United States government did not recognize it, it appeared on American-made maps.
It sent an infantry regiment and a cavalry squadron to fight against the Axis alongside the Red Army during World War II.
Despite their questionable origins, stamps from the country were popular with young collectors in the mid-20th century due to their colorful designs and frequent use of diamond and triangular shapes.
A monument near Kyzyl marks the geographic center of Asia.
Tuvan throat singing was added by UNESCO to the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (2009).
