Military Personnel
    (August 20, 1778-October 24, 1842)
    Born in Chillán, Chile
Fought for the independence of Chile with José de San Martin and Simon Bolivar’s help
Defeated Royalist forces at Chillán (1813), Chacabuco (1817), and Maipo (1818)
    2nd Supreme Director of Chile (February 16, 1817–January 28, 1823)
Exiled to Peru after his resignation
    Died in Lima, Peru
    Reburied in Chile (1869)
He was the illegitimate son of an army officer of Irish descent and an aristocratic woman.
He never directly met his father.
He was constantly at odds with independence fighter José Miguel Carrera.
His acquirement of dictatorial powers really ticked off Chileans up to the point that a rebellion forced him to resign.
His corpse was moved around for four times.
He was one of Chile’s founding fathers.
One of his quotes that helped inspire the Wars of Independence was, ‘Lads! Live with honor, or die with glory! He who is brave, follow me!’
He ruled Chile in a sensible way, and when a rebellion forced him to resign due to the new powers granted to him, he did so rather than trying to become more dictatorial.
He lived a quiet life during his exile in Peru.
Chile’s largest national park is named after him.
