Biblical Character

The Resume

    (655 BC-586 BC)
    Born in Anathoth, Israel
    Son of the Prophet Hilikiah
    Name in Hebrew is Yirməyāhū
Name translates roughly to mean 'Yah Exalts'
Major Prophet of the Old Testament and Hebrew Bible
Ministry extended to a period of 40 years (627-587 BC)
Credited with authoring the Book of Jeremiah, 1 Kings, 2 Kings and the Book of Lamentations

Why he might be annoying:

    He wrote with a collaborator.
His nickname is 'the weeping prophet.'
Sci-Fi nuts have claimed that he saw a UFO in one passage of his texts, proving the existence of aliens in the Bible (Jeremiah 4:23-26).
He was chosen by God while still in the womb, before even being born yet (a little hasty of Elohim, there).
He was arguably the most reluctant of the Prophets to accept his calling (granted he was only a boy at the time).
His main message to Jerusalem was to not resist the Babylonian invaders, but to accept their captivity because God was on Babylon's side, which didn't exactly endear him to his audience.
His message was so unpopular that he was labeled a traitor and imprisoned. He was eventually freed by the victorious (and grateful) Babylonians.
He complained about the corruption of Torah scholars by calling them 'dishonest bible copiers.' Atheists have since seized on the passage as proof that a Prophet admitted the Bible is a forged hoax (Jeremiah 8:8).
Even more bizarrely, some have claimed he condemns Christmas trees because he condemns pagan rituals involving trees fashioned into the shape of a pagan god and overlaid with precious metals' (self-explanatory).

Why he might not be annoying:

Midrashic texts place him on par with Moses, as his equal with similar experiences.
He accurately predicted that the Babylonian Captivity would last 70 years.
He is one of the few Prophets who holds equal weight & importance in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam (the only other two perhaps being Abraham and Moses).
He frequently received threats on his life for presenting an inconvenient truth (don't shoot the messenger).
He was beaten and put into stocks by a false prophet and a temple priest.
Judean officials tried to kill him by lowering him into a cistern to drown in the mud without food or water. He survived, but was imprisoned again, anyway.
He may have been murdered in Egypt by Jewish dissenters.
He is held up as a profile in courage who withstood adversity and hatred for what he believed was right.
His language in Lamentations and the Book of Jeremiah is some of the most heartbreakingly beautiful prose in the Bible.
For example, he wrote 'oh, that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!' (Jeremiah 9:1)
