    Played on records by Phil Spector, John Lennon, George Harrison, Joe Cocker, Traffic, Steely Dan, Frank Zappa, Harry Nilsson, The Beach Boys, The Byrds, Alice Cooper, The Carpenters, etc.
    Co-wrote the song 'Layla'
    He abused drugs.
    At his last gig, a Vegas show with Paul Anka, he walked offstage during the first song, unable to play (1979).
    He began hearing voices and checked himself in and out of mental hospitals 14 times.
    He became convinced that his mother was one of the voices in his head and bludgeoned and stabbed her to death (June 3, 1983).
    He became the first convicted murderer to win a Grammy when 'Layla' was named best rock and roll song of 1992.
    He was such an in demand session musician that producer Perry Botkin noted, 'I would put off record dates just to make sure I could get him.'
    Initially, he had such a squeaky-clean, all-American image that Frank Zappa nicknamed him 'Skippy.'
    He played the drums for Animal in 'The Muppet Movie.'
    Despite a well-documented history of mental illness, he drew a 16 years to life sentence thanks to a change in California law greatly restricting the use of the insanity defense.
    He said of the music industry's reaction, 'When the crime happened, they all just turned their backs on me. I don't blame 'em, to tell you the truth.'
