He was also a songwriter, with his biggest success being the Lou Rawls hit 'A Natural Man.'
He got good reviews for his portrayals of Lenny Bruce on stage.

'The Advocate' called 'God Save the Queens' 'an earnest, if now dated, attempt to break down some of the stereotypes' about homosexuality.
