    Portrayed by Ann Blyth in 'The Helen Morgan Story' (1957)
    She entered the Miss Montreal beauty pageant, but was disqualified when her American citizenship was discovered (1923).
    Several attempts to open her own club were reportedly funded by the Chicago mob.
    She allegedly began her trademark of singing while perched on top of the piano on a night when she was too drunk to stand up.
    She died of cirrhosis of the liver after years of heavy drinking.
    She was discovered at age 12, when a Chicago Daily News reporter heard her singing in a railroad rouondhouse.
    She studied voice at the Metropolitan Opera.
    She was the quintessential torch singer of the 20s.
    Polly Bergen won an Emmy for portraying her in an episode of Playhouse 90.
