The Resume

    (1886-1942)
    Quebec H.C. (AHA/CAHL/ECAHA, 1886-1908)
    Quebec Bulldogs (ECAHA/CHA/NHA/NHL, 1908-1920)
    Hamilton Tigers (NHL, 1920-25)
New York Americans (NHL, December 15, 1925-1941)
    Brooklyn Americans (NHL, (1941-March 18, 1942)
    Ceased Operations (September 28, 1942)

Why they might be annoying:

Due to financial difficulties, the NHL took over the team in 1936 and again in 1937.
Their final season as the New York Americans was their worst, with a record of 8 wins, 29 loses and 11 ties for 27 points.
In fifteen of their seventeen seasons as the NY/Brooklyn Americans, they had a losing record.
As the NY/Brooklyn Americans, they played in 784 games winning 255, losing 402 and tying 127 games.
In their final two seasons, they finished in last place and were the only team not to make the play-offs.
Although they continued to play at Madison Square Garden, the Americans changed their name to Brooklyn Americans, in hopes of creating a Brooklyn-NY rivalry with the Rangers.
They were the last of the early NHL teams to fold, leaving a core of six NHL teams, the NY Rangers, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadians and Toronto Maple Leafs. Those six teams still play today.

Why they might not be annoying:

They purchased the Hamilton Tigers to fill their roster.
They became the second U.S. NHL team, joining the Boston Bruins. The third U.S. team, the Pittsburgh Pirates began play the same year (1925).
They were the first NHL team to play a hockey game at Madison Square Garden, losing to the Montreal Canadiens 3-1 (December 15, 1925).
The New York Times reported on the American's first game 'From the land of ice and snow there came to New York last night a new game to celebrate the formal opening of Madison Square Garden' (December 16, 1925).
Their success at being a fan favorite, may have caused their down fall. When they began playing at Madison Square Garden, they would sell out the place. This inspired Madison Square Garden to purchase their own team, The New York Rangers.
In 1939, The NY Rangers (7) and NY Americans (3) combined for a then record 10 goals in a single period (March 16, 1939).
Due to WW II, there was a shortage of hockey players. The Americans decided to disband so other teams could fill their rosters, saying they would return after WW II.
