Celebrity's Relative
He and his eldest son made their film debut (in 1956's 'Pioneer Woman') at the same time.
For a movie career, he changed out his long surname for a funny-sounding first (screen) name.
Throughout the nineties, he was typecast as a priest.
He took part in the pitiful shot-by-shot 1998 remake of 'Psycho' with Vince Vaughn.
He lived in the shadow of his celebrated filmmaker son.
To add insult to injury, the bulk of his screen credits are small roles in projects either starring or produced/directed by his son.
    He made over 100 films.
    He was a widower twice.
He was serving three years in the United States Air Force at the time of Ron's birth.
He first came to public attention acting in a touring production of 'Mister Roberts' opposite Henry Fonda in 1960.
He guested on several episodes of 'The Andy Griffith Show,' frequently playing scenes opposite Ronnie and his 'on-screen father.'
He was an active and involved presence with his two 'child star' sons and maintained a strong bond with them, avoiding the regular pitfalls of 'stage parenting.'
When asked what it was like to be directed by his own son, he beamed:  ‘Ron and I know each other so well that we work together, easily. I never remind him that he is my son when we are working.’
His last major public appearance was on the Red Carpet for the premiere of 'Broken Memories' (which starred his granddaughter Bryce Dallas Howard).
After the event, Bryce took to social media to praise him, writing: 'He’s had a 65-year career where he has never broken out as a movie star, he’s never made the money that people dream of, and yet he’s carved out this incredibly unique and remarkable and beautiful career of a character actor. He’s an example of that stick-to-it-ness and what that adds up to in a life.'
