    Known for her crime novels featuring medical examiner Kay Scarpetta, including 'Postmortem' (1990), 'The Body Farm' (1994), 'The Last Precinct' (2000) and 'Predator' (2005)
    Also wrote 'Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper Case Closed' (2002)
    By her late teens, she was anorexic and depressed.
    She was convicted of drunk driving after crashing her Mercedes (1993).
    She reportedly bought and destroyed a painting by Walter Sickert in her quest to prove that the artist was Jack the Ripper.
    She took out full-page ads in two British newspapers to deny that she is obsessed with Jack the Ripper.
    She describes her father as an emotionally abusive man who 'wasn't even nice to me on his deathbed.'
    Her first novel 'Postmortem' won the four major awards for crime fiction: the Edgar, Creasy, Anthony and Macavity Awards.
    She provided funding for the Virginia Institute for Forensic Science and Medicine.
    After her same-sex marriage to Staci Gruber, she said, 'I figure that if I'm honest about it, perhaps society will change.'
