    Portrayed patriarch Tom Horton on 'Days of Our Lives' (1965-94)
    Recited the show's opening, 'Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.'
    Also performed the voice over for the first PBS station identification
    Grandfather of 'Survivor Panama Exile Island' winner Aras Baskauskas

    Before moving on to TV, he was known as 'King of the B's.'
    He was an alcoholic.
    He wrote a book of poetry titled 'A Day in the Life' and a biography titled 'The Days of My Life.'

    He served with the Marines in the Pacific during World War II.
    He said his life 'really started' at age 69 when he quit drinking.
    As a tribute after his death, the producers of 'Days of Our Lives' retained his narration of the opening.
