Sports Executive

The Resume

    (circa 1936- )
    Resides in Locust Valley, NY
Chairman/CEO of Sterling Equities, which owns the New York Mets baseball team
Bought the Mets in 1980 along with Nelson Doubleday and other investors for a reported $21.1 million dollars.
Bought out Doubleday's share of the Mets in 2002
Serves as a Director of Bear, Stearns & Co. Inc. and Loews Corporation, and is a member of the JP Morgan Chase Regional Advisory Board
Owns the Brooklyn Cyclones, a minor league affiliate of the Mets

Why he might be annoying:

He is the prominent symbol of the Mets' overspending for the last few seasons.
The Mets didn't reach the playoffs for the last 3 years with one of the highest payrolls in baseball.
They refused to give authorization to increase the payroll in 2000 to improve the Mets after they lost to the New York Yankees in the World Series. Because of this, the Mets missed out on signing possibly the best player in baseball (Alex Rodriguez).
He swore that he would not fire former manager Bobby Valentine after the 2002 season, but did so anyway.

Why he might not be annoying:

He fired former General Manager Steve Phillips in 2003 after the Mets got off to a horrible start.
He seems committed to helping the Mets rebuild their farm system with young talent and bringing them up through the system instead of spending millions of dollars on over-the-hill free agents.
He amassed a large fortune after years in the real estate industry.
He grew up a Brooklyn Dodgers fan.
