    He declined two offers from Condoleezza Rice to serve as Deputy Secretary of State.
    After retiring from the Marine Corps, he became a lobbyist for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
    He served 40 years in the Marines, including a stint in Vietnam, and earned many military honors.
    He graduated Georgetown University, where he played on the basketball team.
    He is known for his calm demeanor.
    He helped develop the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program to better prepare troops for hand to hand combat.
    He was critical of George W. Bush's war in Iraq.
    He believes that improving energy policy is key to stronger national security.
