    Named 'My Man O' War' by owner August Belmont's wife Eleanor in honor of her husband's service in World War I (the 'My' was later dropped)
    Sold to Samuel Riddle for $5000 (August 1918)
    Won the Belmont Stakes (named after his previous owner) by a then record 20 lengths (1920)
    Died of a heart attack at age 30
    He was feisty and proved to be a challenge to 'break.'
    He was nicknamed 'Big Red.' One challenger called him 'that red lobster.'
    He lost his only race (to a horse named Upset) because he was facing the wrong way when the race began.
    In those days (1919) horses circled at a starting line (there was no starting gate).
    He didn't have a chance to win the Triple Crown because his owner didn't enter him in the Kentucky Derby.
    He had a nasty habit of chewing on his own hooves.
    By his second to last race nobody wanted to be blown out by him.
    In a two horse race, he beat Hoodwink in excess of one hundred lengths and set a new world record of 2:40 for a 1 5/8 mile track.
    He won his final race at the Kenilworth Park Gold Cup against 1919 Triple Crown winner Sir Barton by 7 lengths. That was the first horse race ever filmed in its entirety.
    During his career he set 3 world records, 2 American records, and 3 track records.
    His owner once turned down $1 million for him, saying, 'Lots of men have a million dollars, but only one can own Man O' War.'
    He sired 1937 Triple Crown winner War Admiral.
    He was the grand-sire of legendary movie fame horse Seabiscuit.
    He was inducted in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame (1957).
    He is ranked #1 of the top 100 thoroughbred champions of the 20th Century by 'Blood-Horse' magazine (Secretariat is #2).
