    Served as a liaison officer during World War I, rising to major general
    Succeeded his father, Ferdinand I, who resigned following Bulgaria's defeat in World War I
    Ruler of Bulgaria (1918-43)
    Succeeded by Simeon II

Why he might be annoying:

    He suspended the constitution and abolished political parties.
    He joined the Axis during World War II in order to regain territory that had been lost to Yugoslavia and Greece following WWI.
    He allowed 11,000 Jews living in these occupied territories to be sent to concentration camps.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He survived multiple assassination attempts during the 1920s.
    During World War II, he refused to declare war on the Soviet Union or send troops to the Eastern Front.
    He refused to allow the deportation of the 50,000 Jews living within Bulgaria's pre-war borders.
    He died shortly after a stormy meeting with Adolf Hitler, leading to suspicions that he had been poisoned so a more obedient government could take his place.
