    Born in New Orleans, Louisiana
    Birth name was Frederick Ernest Morrison
    Original member of the 'Our Gang' troupe (1922-24)
    Portrayed Scruno in the East Side Kids films (1940-41)
    He began in show biz as an infant.
    Before being dubbed 'Sunshine Sammy' he was billed as 'Sambo,' 'Little Sambo' and 'Smiling Sambo.'
    Hal Roach originally planned to star him in his own series of comedy shorts, but only one film was made.
    After World War II, he turned down an offer to star in the Bowery Boy films.
    When he signed with Roach, he became the first black actor with a long-term Hollywood contract.
    Between his stints with Our Gang and the East Side Kids, he had a successful vaudeville career.
    He led the standing ovation when Hal Roach received his lifetime achievement Oscar (1984).
    He commented, 'I was the first black personality to be featured in fan magazines and the first black to be a millionaire because of the movies. My family is close and very loving with each other.... I fall asleep every night of my life counting my many, many blessings.'
