    Attended Northwestern University
    End for the Chicago Bears (1937-1946)
    Assistant coach for the Washington Redskins (1965)
    Head coach for the Detroit Lions (1957-1964) and the Miami Dolphins (1966-1969)
    NFL Coach of the Year (1957)
    He shares his name with an NFL safety, among many others.
    He had Bobby Layne traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers for Earl Morrall and two picks from the next draft which resulted in the Lions not finishing in first place (The Curse of Bobby Layne).
    His head coaching tenure in Miami was a disappointment.
    He was fired as a head coach twice.
    He coached the Lions to a 59-14 win over the Cleveland Browns to win the 1957 NFL Championship Game during his first year as a head coach.
    He helped his hometown Bears win four NFL Championship Games (1940-1941, 1943, 1946).
    During the course of his playing career, he recorded 111 receptions and caught 15 touchdowns.
    He was the Associated Press' first NFL Coach of the Year (1957).
    He was the original Dolphins head coach.
    He is in the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.
