Why he might be annoying:

What a name! It sounds very porn star-ish!
Letterman showed an ad on his show, beginning 'Assmania.
Right on the spot, Letterman phoned the gas station actually got to talk to him!
'Assmania' resulted in cars lining up (literally the next day) at his station to get fueled up and to see The Assman.
Tony Orlando, who just happened to be on the Late Show that night sang a beautiful ode to him.
Over the next two decades, people continued go to his station looking for him to buy gas and take pictures with him (including AmIAnnoying.com contributor Ricky, seen in the bottom picture).

Why he might not be annoying:

His last name is of German heritage and is pronounced 'Oz-Man.'
He was also a mechanic.
Aforementioned ad appeared in a Canadian town paper but still managed to catch Letterman's eye.
That same ad was simply published to notify Regina residents that The Assman had moved gas stations.
In the following months, he was invited to make public appearances all over North America including judging a bikini contest and showing for a truck pull.
August 1995, he finally appeared on Late Show, where he was presented with a big bouquet of flowers - and a loudly cheering audience!
He gave a very Canuck-familiar Canadian brand Petro Canada some international attention.
He represented the working class Canadian (except how many of them appear on the Late Show for having the name 'Assman?).'
