    (September 2, 1838-November 11, 1917)
    Born in Honolulu, Hawaii
    Last monarch of Hawaii (1891-93)
Her attempt to restore the powers of the monarchy backfired badly, leading to a coup in which she was overthrown and a republic proclaimed.
President Grover Cleveland offered to use US force to restore her to the throne if she agreed to a general amnesty. She refused, saying that she would have the leaders of the revolt executed.
She was placed under house arrest at her palace after a cache of firearms was found in her gardens.
An investigation by the US concluded that her overthrow had been illegal.
The weapons found in her garden may have been planted.
She formally renounced the throne in return for the release of her jailed supporters.
She was an accomplished musician and composed the standard 'Aloha Oe' and the state song 'Hawaii Ponoi.'
