    There is some controversy over whether or not he disregarded orders to end his space walk.
    He began his military career as a U.S. Army balloon pilot.
    His career in the military and with NASA meant a life on the move for his wife and children.
    He had a reputation as a man who drove himself too hard.
    He was extremely patriotic and upon making his historic space walk announced that he felt 'Red, White and Blue all over.'
    He burnt to death during a systems test on the launch pad.
    He served his country in the Air Force.
    Four schools, a hospital, a man made island and a star have been named in his honor.
    He flew his first plane at age 12.
