    He presided over Andrew Jackson's harsh Indian Removal policies.
    He was frequently absent from his post as governor of Michigan Territory.
    He supported the right of every state to choose whether or not to allow slavery.
    His nomination as presidential candidate caused a split in the Democratic Party between pro-slavery and anti-slavery groups.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He served as a brigadier general in the War of 1812.
    He led an expedition to map the unexplored area of northern Minnesota (1820).
    He resigned as Secretary of State in protest of President Buchanan's weak response to conflict between the North and South.
