    Appeared in the films 'Orpheus' (1950), 'Elena and Her Man' (1956), 'The Sun Also Rises' (1957), 'The Roots of Heaven' (1958), 'Bonjour Tristesse' (1958), 'Crack in the Mirror' (1960), 'The Big Gamble' (1961), 'Belphegor, Phantom of the Louvre' (2001), 'Everyman's Feast' (2002) and 'An Education' (2009)
    She said about the late 40s, when she was appearing on magazine covers as the face of the New Bohemians, 'I was becoming famous without really having done anything, which is a very uncomfortable position.'
    She attempted suicide during a bout of depression (1965).
    She was married three times, divorced twice.
    She had two nose jobs during a stint in Hollywood.
    She was imprisoned by the Gestapo because her mother was a member of the French Resistance.
    At a concert in Chile during the Pinochet dictatorship attended by high-ranking generals, she defiantly launched into a repetoire of anti-military songs.
    She suffered a heart attack during a concert in her home town, but recovered (2001).
    She remained a riveting stage presence into her 80s.
