    Recorded the album 'Poetry and Jazz at the Blackhawk' (1958)
    Organized and emceed the Six Gallery reading where Allen Ginsberg introduced 'Howl' (October 7, 1955)
    Called 'Father of the Beats'
    He married his third wife, Marthe, before getting divorced from his second wife, Marie.
    After Marthe left him, he removed all mentions of her name from his poems.
    He was too old for the draft during World War II, but declared himself a conscientious objector anyway.
    He said that writers have 'very little use for critics,' but wrote a lot of literary criticism.
    He became increasingly irritated about being considered part of the Beat Generation.
    His mother died when he was 10, his father when he was 12.
    During World War II, he helped Japanese-American internees.
    He wrote the entry for 'Literature' for the 1973 Encyclopedia Britannica.
    He was influenced by Greek lyric poetry and Oriental poetry.
