    (April 27, 1878-December 16, 1917)
    Born in Humboldt, Iowa
    Heavyweight champion (1908-13)
Pro record: 154 wins, 6 losses
Signature moves include the double leg takedown, ankle lock and toe hold
He was accused of winning the world title from George Hackenschmidt by resorting to scratching, gouging and rubbing oil in Hackenschmidt's eyes.
For the rematch, he allegedly bribed Hackenschmidt's sparring partner, Ad Santel, to injure Hack's knee in a training session.
He officially died from kidney failure, but the cause was rumored to be syphilis.
Several observers felt that Hackenschmidt's allegations were bunk and that Gotch won fairly by using his superior endurance to wear out his opponent.
He was credited with popularizing wrestling in the US.
His rematch with Hackenschmidt at Comiskey Park drew a then-record gate of $87,000.
He was invited to the White House by Teddy Roosevelt to take on a Japanese jujitsu expert; Gotch won handily.
