Sports Team
    (2002- )
    Located in New Orleans, Louisiana
Formerly known as the Charlotte Hornets (1988-2002), New Orleans Hornets (2002-2013) and the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets (2005-2007)
Notable players include Baron Davis, Jamal Mashburn, Chris Paul, Anthony Davis, Austin Rivers, Nerlens Noel and Ryan Anderson
One retired number: Pete Maravich's #7 (who played for the New Orleans Jazz)
Their team is named after one of the least intimidating birds.
They were named the Pelicans after the team's owner, Tom Benson wanted to bring the Jazz nickname back, but was denied by the Utah franchise.
Rather then bring in experienced basketball personnel, they have many Saints employees doing double duty with the franchise.
They aren't the first franchise to use the Pelicans moniker, as it was initially used by a minor league baseball franchise in the early 20th century.
They changed their name from the Hornets, in order to better represent the region in which they play in.
They relinquished the Hornets nickname to the Charlotte Bobcats, as the new ownership felt that the name was irrelevant to the City of New Orleans.
They are named after the state bird of Louisiana, and continue to use the fleur-de-lis symbol that is recognized in the state of Louisiana.
After a few years of instability as a result of the league's takeover of the franchise, they were purchased by New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson, which assures the long-term viability of the franchise in New Orleans.
In an attempt to better reflect the name and region, they changed their color scheme from teal, purple and gold to navy blue, red, gold and white.
After the Hornets relocated to New Orleans, the first team they played against at home was New Orleans' former NBA team, the Jazz.
They relinquished the Hornets nickname, history and records of the Charlotte years to the Bobcats which now technically makes them the NBA's youngest franchise.
