    When she moved to Alaska, her 17-year-old son stayed behind in Minnesota.
    Environmentalists worried that she was altering the eagles' natural migration patterns.
    Other birds, such as cranes, loons and kittiwakes, were driven out of the area by the eagles.
    Some Homer residents considered the eagles a menace, causing car accidents and attacking pets.
    She admitted, 'It gets kind of gross sometimes, especially when you're handling a lot of slimy carcasses.'
    She was a rodeo rider until she was thrown from her horse and fractured her knee in fifteen places.
    She fell in love with the natural beauty of Alaska after attending a cousin's wedding there.
    She kept up her feeding schedule on crutches after breaking her leg (1985).
    She returned to the feedings only three days after a mastectomy (1994).
